ROD OLSON When I was in middle school my father brought me a box home from his work. It was an entire car engine (a blown engine from a small Fiat car), and it was never going to run again. He placed it on our back paver brick patio (probably to the chagrin of my mother) and told me to tear it apart, figure out how it works, and try to put it together again. I loved it. I couldn’t wreck it, but I could just learn from it. It not only was fun but also gave me a love of learning how things work.

Coaches must care about more than winning games; they must be mentors, who are about building good men and women on and off the field. Employers must care about more than the bottom line; they, too, must be mentors for these emerging adults, helping them develop values and skills. Youth workers must care about more than getting ‘‘big numbers’’ of teens to attend their meetings, treating students as consumers by offering superficial games and activities. They must be mentors, challenging kids to contribute, to serve, and to lead—even when the kids are young.

Certainly they can’t be delayed in their maturity—look at all the anxiety they feel in their lives, just like adults. It’s true. When we take a cursory glance at students today, their problem may seem like a paradox: How can we say they are immature or inexperienced when their lives appear to be pressurized? ’’ They are overscheduled, with no margins in their daily routines, trying to get into the right college. The key question is: What is stressing them out? My work reveals that one primary facet of the teen or tween lifestyle is that the arenas in which even gifted students perform (from piano recitals, to soccer, to karate, to drama club, to managing their Facebook profile) almost always seem hollow or meaningless when compared to the larger world.
