There, the crust foundered and the western block fell up to 1000 metres relative to the mountains on the east. This same faulting process has created valleys like the Elk, Flathead and Okanagan. In the south Okanagan, beginning about 50 million years ago, a large piece of Quesnellia slid off about 90 kilometres to the west, exposing the basement rocks of the old continental margin. These ancient rocks can be seen along the east side of Skaha Lake, on both sides of Vaseux Lake and, most spectacularly, in the vertical wall of McIntyre Bluff, just south of Vaseux Lake.

After an interglacial period of at least 30,000 years, the last major glaciation began about 25,000 to 30,000 years ago. The glaciers grew slowly at first, and some areas remained ice-free until after 17,000 years ago. The Cordilleran Ice Sheet reached its maximum extent 14,000 years ago but soon began to shrink and, by 10,000 years ago, had vanished, leaving only a few mountain ice fields and glaciers. Opposite page: The result of 200 million years of geological activity is the diverse landscapes of British Columbia, which can be differentiated into six elongate regions parallel to the continental margin.
